## Migrations
The database schema is versioned with [Toasty](https://github.com/tokio-rs/toasty) migrations, stored in `crates/steep-server/toasty/` (commit them).
After changing a model in `crates/steep-server/src/schemas/`, generate a migration:
```sh
./scripts/migrate-generate.sh describe_change
```
Apply the pending migrations **before starting the service** — the server does not migrate at boot. The tests need the same schema: run this before `cargo test` too (CI does it as well):
```sh
./scripts/migrate-apply.sh
```
Both scripts load the `.env` file at the project root (so `DATABASE_URL` is picked up). Generation runs through `cargo run -p steep-server --`; applying uses the compiled `steep-server` binary when present (as in the image), falling back to `cargo run` otherwise.
The `Containerfile` does this at startup: its entrypoint runs `scripts/migrate-apply.sh` before exec'ing the server. The CLI reads the migration files from `MIGRATIONS_DIR` (defaults to the crate's `toasty/` directory; the image sets it to `/app/toasty`).
Other subcommands: `migration snapshot`, `migration drop`, `migration reset`. They read `DATABASE_URL`.
## Development
The easiest way to get started is with the provided [Dev Container](https://containers.dev/) (VS Code or Zed with the dev container extension).
@@ -116,6 +139,24 @@ cargo run -p steep-server
Copy `.env.example` to `.env` and fill in your values before running.
## Job queue
Steep is meant to run as a **single instance**. Webhooks are stored in the `jobs` table
of PostgreSQL, and the worker is woken up as soon as a job is pushed (no polling).
A job still `processing` at startup was interrupted by the previous process: it is put
back in the queue and reviewed again. Do not run two instances on the same database,
they would both take over each other's running jobs.
## Dependencies
TLS is handled by [rustls](https://github.com/rustls/rustls) (with `ring`), so neither
the build nor the image needs OpenSSL. The `Containerfile` runtime image only
installs `ca-certificates` and `git`.
`cargo deny check` audits the dependencies (security advisories, licenses, banned
crates, sources) with the policy of `deny.toml`. It runs in the CI, and it also fails
if `openssl-sys` or `native-tls` comes back into the dependency tree.
## Metrics
Steep optionally exposes a Prometheus metrics endpoint, useful for scraping with an [OpenTelemetry Collector](https://opentelemetry.io/docs/collector/) or any Prometheus-compatible scraper.

- If a repository has no Dev Container configuration, run its review in a default container based on `debian:stable-slim`.
- Use `/workspace` as the workspace path for the default container and as the fallback when `workspaceFolder` is not specified.
## 1.3 — Typed action routing — planned
## 1.3 — Durable jobs & resumption — planned
- Persist review jobs and their progress in PostgreSQL so in-flight work survives a restart and can be resumed instead of being lost.
- Expose an API to retrieve the list of jobs by state: running, pending, and review done.
- Stream job events over Server-Sent Events (SSE) so clients see status changes in real time.
## 1.4 — YAML configuration — planned
- Add a YAML configuration file as the primary way to configure Steep, replacing part of the current environment variables.
- Move non-secret settings such as the model, timeouts, concurrency limit, and sandbox iterations into the file, and keep secrets (API keys, tokens, webhook secret, database URL) in environment variables.
## 2.0 — Typed action routing and implementation requests — planned
- Introduce a type-safe model output for the action Steep should take, such as `Review` or `Implementation`.
- Route review requests (for example, “@steep, review this PR”) to the existing review flow.
- Recognize implementation requests (for example, “@steep, rename method `XXX` to `YYY`”) and establish their dispatch path. Execution of implementation requests is planned for 2.0.
## 2.0 — Implementation requests — planned
- Use the typed action from 1.3 to route explicit implementation requests to an implementation workflow.
- Recognize implementation requests (for example, “@steep, rename method `XXX` to `YYY`”) and route them to the implementation workflow.
- For a request on an issue, clone the repository from its default branch and implement the requested features on a new branch.
- For a request on an existing pull request, clone its branch and implement the requested modifications there.
- When the agent's iteration loop ends, the orchestration layer automatically pushes the resulting changes: it opens a pull request for issue-based work, or updates the existing pull request branch. The agent does not receive or invoke a push tool.

- Allow configuring a dedicated model for pull request reviews and another for implementation requests.
- Route each action type to its configured model, with a clear fallback when only one model is configured.
## 2.2 — Sub-agents — planned
- Let the agent delegate well-scoped parts of a task to sub-agents that run their own iteration loop.
- Run independent sub-agents in parallel and have the main agent consolidate their results.
## 3.0 — Autonomous Sentry fixes — planned
- Automatically discover project errors reported by Sentry, without waiting for a user comment.

//! Le daemon est joint par son **socket** (celui de l'hôte, monté dans le
//! container de Steep) : [`ContainerRuntime::connect`] suit `DOCKER_HOST` comme
//! le fait le CLI `docker`, et retombe sur le socket local. Aucun binaire de
//! runtime n'est donc requis dans l'image, et `podman` fonctionne de la même
//! façon dès lors qu'il expose son socket compatible Docker.
//! The daemon is reached through its **socket** (the host's, mounted into the
//! Steep container): [`ContainerRuntime::connect`] follows `DOCKER_HOST` like the
//! `docker` CLI does, and falls back to the local socket. No runtime binary is
//! therefore required in the image, and `podman` works the same way as long as it
//! exposes its Docker-compatible socket.
//!
//! # Isolation
//!
//! Chaque sandbox dispose de son propre tag d'image, de son propre container et de
//! son propre réseau. Le container démarre attaché à ce réseau afin que les hooks
//! `postCreateCommand` / `postStartCommand` puissent récupérer des dépendances
//! (par ex. `npm install`) ; une fois les hooks exécutés, le container est déconnecté
//! du réseau pour le reste de sa durée de vie. Chaque commande est bornée par un timeout.
//! Each sandbox has its own image tag, its own container and its own network. The
//! container starts attached to that network so that the `postCreateCommand` /
//! `postStartCommand` hooks can fetch dependencies (e.g. `npm install`); once the
//! hooks have run, the container is disconnected from the network for the rest of
//! its lifetime. Every command is bounded by a timeout.
//!
//! Les `runArgs` du `devcontainer.json` sont ignorés : ils viennent du dépôt, donc
//! d'une pull request non fiable, et pourraient rattacher le container à un autre
//! réseau ou lui donner des privilèges qui annuleraient cette isolation.
//! The `devcontainer.json` `runArgs` are ignored: they come from the repository,
//! hence from an untrusted pull request, and could attach the container to another
//! network or grant it privileges that would defeat this isolation.
